Kesäkuun paikallisvaaleissa hutujen suurimman kapinallisarmeijan CNDD-FDD- puolue sai alustavien arvioiden mukaan 55,3 prosenttia paikoista. Paikallisvaalit olivat Burundissa ensimmäiset sitten vuoden 1993 presidentinvaalien. CNDD-FDD:n voitto yllätti tarkkailijat ja kilpailevat puolueet. Burundissa pidetään parlamenttivaalit heinäkuun neljäntenä ja presidentinvaalit elokuussa.

Allo staff medico dellorganizzazione umanitaria Medici Senza Frontiere (MSF) č stato negato laccesso a Songore, il campo profughi di 7.000 ruandesi che fuggirono verso il Burundi ai primi di maggio. La clinica di MSF allinterno del campo č ora sorvegliata dai militari dellesercito burundese e lo staff medico non puņ entrare nei propri locali, privando cosģ la restante popolazione delle cure mediche. Prima che a MSF fosse negato laccesso a Songore, lorganizzazione effettuava oltre un centinaio di consultazioni al giorno.
