Neglected is too kind a word to describe the village of Vanand, abandoned is more like it. Located in western Armenia right on the border with Turkey, some 500 people live here without electricity, gas or running water. Residents blame the local authorities for the primitive conditions, this is a border village and they cant be bothered with it.

Though many fonts are available for the Armenian language, these are not standardised enough for a reliable information exchange. UNESCO and the Matenadaran Institute in Yerevan of Armenia have jointly launched a project to develop a unicode compliant font of the Armenian language which dates back to 405 AD.

Las masivas manifestaciones contra al Gobierno de Robert Kocharian para que renuncie a su cargo, tras las acusaciones de fraude en las elecciones presidenciales del pasado ańo, y la represión contra manifestantes y oposición, que se ha saldado con el cierre de las sedes de los principales partidos polķticos y el arresto de lķderes parlamentarios, han aumentado la inestabilidad en Armenia. La Escuela de Cultura de Paz advierte que esta situación, unida a la grave crisis económica, podrķa desencadenar un cambio polķtico siguiendo el ejemplo de la vecina Georgia e insta a la comunidad internacional a intervenir para acabar con el hostigamiento y la represión en el paķs.

A new information and communications centre was recently opened in Armenian capital Yerevan as part of the country’s efforts to boost access to the Internet and e-governance. The centre, which has 38 workstations and can accommodate 600 users a day, will promote ICT through research and training programmes, and public discussions, and will serve as a hub for Freenet public access sites being established in many regions.
